This can be ok, however, the teaching materials developed for the courses are severely lacking. They are are expected to write in APA format for many terms before taking a course to teach them how to write in APA format.Īll of the courses I have taught so far utilize OER books/websites/resources. They do not enroll the students in courses in an order that would make sense, such as taking a course on how to write at college level first. They receive no orientation and are expected to navigate the online learning management system without difficulty. Often times students are enrolled in an online degree program with little to no experience with computers.
Majority of the students are non-traditional students such as first time college students, older adults, single parents, low socioeconomic status, etc. The students are often not set up for success-they are enrolled in the most difficult courses at the same time They start the course late, etc. There are no benefits and no opportunity for growth. The pay is terrible-$100 per student if the class is over 6 for each 10 week term taught. You must have great computer knowledge and be able to utilize zoom efficiently. HOWEVER, you must be extremely familiar with Canvas and be able to work autonomously because you will get zero direction from departmental deans/chairs or other instructors.
This is a great place to start teaching if you have no experience and need a way to break into teaching. Ok, here is my breakdown as an adjunct instructor for nearly 2 years at this organization, I hope it helps someone in their decision making on whether or not to apply to ANU.
